After learning about Arabia before the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, we now come to the family and lineage into which he was born.

The lineage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is important in the Seerah—not because Islam teaches that a person's ancestry alone makes them righteous, but because Allah chose the Messenger ﷺ from a distinguished line among the descendants of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام.

The Prophet ﷺ himself spoke about the distinction of his lineage.

In Sahih Muslim 2276, he said that Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Isma'il, Quraysh from Kinanah, Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and then chose him from Banu Hashim.

1. From Ibrahim عليه السلام to Isma'il عليه السلام

To understand the lineage of Muhammad ﷺ, we need to go back to Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام.

Ibrahim عليه السلام had two sons who are especially important in the history of the Abrahamic prophets:

Isma'il عليه السلام and Ishaq عليه السلام.

Isma'il عليه السلام lived in the region of Makkah with his mother Hajar عليها السلام, according to the well-known Islamic tradition recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.

The descendants of Isma'il عليه السلام eventually became connected with the tribes of Arabia, including Kinanah and, later, Quraysh.

The Prophet ﷺ specifically identified this chain of distinction:

Isma'il → Kinanah → Quraysh → Banu Hashim → Muhammad ﷺ

This is established through the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' رضي الله عنه in Sahih Muslim.

2. Kinanah

Kinanah was an important Arab lineage from the descendants of Isma'il عليه السلام.

From Kinanah came Quraysh, the tribe that would eventually become the dominant tribe of Makkah.

The Prophet ﷺ did not merely identify himself as an Arab or even simply as a member of Quraysh. He explained that Allah had chosen successive levels of lineage, ending with his own clan, Banu Hashim.

This makes the lineage of the Prophet ﷺ particularly significant when studying his early life.

3. Quraysh — The Tribe of the Prophet ﷺ

Muhammad ﷺ belonged to Quraysh, the leading tribe of Makkah.

Quraysh was not a single small family. It consisted of several clans, and different clans held different responsibilities and influence within Makkah.

Among those clans was Banu Hashim.

The Prophet ﷺ was born into Banu Hashim through his father, Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib.

Thus, his commonly given lineage begins:

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim...

4. Banu Hashim

Banu Hashim means the descendants of Hashim.

Hashim was an ancestor of the Prophet ﷺ and an important figure in the history of Makkah.

His full name was Amr ibn Abd Manaf, but he became known as Hashim.

The name Hashim is associated in traditional accounts with generosity and feeding people, and his descendants became known as Banu Hashim.

The Prophet ﷺ later belonged to this clan, and he explicitly mentioned its distinction:

“Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Isma'il, chose Quraysh from Kinanah, chose Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banu Hashim.”

Sahih Muslim 2276

This hadith is one of the strongest sources for understanding the special lineage of the Prophet ﷺ.

Adnan

Classical genealogical sources agree on the lineage up to Adnan, while the names between Adnan and Isma'il عليه السلام are subject to disagreement among genealogists. For that reason, it is better not to present the disputed section as certain historical fact.

6. Adnan

Adnan is an important ancestor in the recognized genealogy of the Prophet ﷺ.

Classical Muslim genealogists generally regard the lineage from Muhammad ﷺ to Adnan as established, while they differed about the genealogy after Adnan.

This distinction is important when presenting Seerah accurately.

We should therefore say:

Muhammad ﷺ was a descendant of Adnan, and through the established Arab genealogy, his lineage belonged to Quraysh and Banu Hashim.

We should not confidently present every name between Adnan and Isma'il عليه السلام as historically certain.

7. Abdullah — The Father of Muhammad ﷺ

The Prophet's ﷺ father was Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib.

He was the son of Abd al-Muttalib and belonged to Banu Hashim.

Abdullah married Aminah bint Wahb, a woman from the respected Banu Zuhrah clan of Quraysh.

Their marriage would become one of the most significant family events in the history of humanity because their son would be Muhammad ﷺ, the final Messenger of Allah.

But Abdullah would not live to see his son grow up.

According to the established Seerah account, Abdullah died before the birth of Muhammad ﷺ.

This meant that Muhammad ﷺ entered the world already without his father.

His early childhood would therefore begin under the care of his mother Aminah, his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib, and later his uncle Abu Talib.

That part of the story will become especially important in the next stages of the Seerah.

8. Abd al-Muttalib — His Grandfather

Abd al-Muttalib was the grandfather of Muhammad ﷺ and one of the most prominent men of Makkah.

His original name was Shaybah, and he became known as Abd al-Muttalib after returning to Makkah under the care of his uncle al-Muttalib.

He became an important leader among Quraysh.

Traditional Seerah accounts also connect Abd al-Muttalib with the rediscovery and restoration of the well of Zamzam.

He was also the grandfather who would care for Muhammad ﷺ after the death of Aminah, before responsibility for the young Muhammad ﷺ eventually passed to Abu Talib.

9. A Family Connected to the Sacred House

The family of Muhammad ﷺ was deeply connected to Makkah and the Ka'bah.

His grandfather Abd al-Muttalib held an important position in Makkah, and the family belonged to Banu Hashim.

This background helps explain why the early life of Muhammad ﷺ was so closely connected with the Ka'bah, Makkah, Quraysh, and the traditions surrounding the Sacred House.

But there is another important point:

The Prophet ﷺ did not receive his honor merely because of his family.

His true honor came from Allah and from his prophethood.

The Qur'an teaches that Allah chooses His messengers.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran over the worlds.”
— Qur'an 3:33

And the Prophet ﷺ himself explained the distinction of his lineage in the authentic hadith mentioned earlier.

10. Why His Lineage Matters?

The lineage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ helps us understand several things about his life.

First — His connection to Ibrahim عليه السلام

The Prophet ﷺ belonged to the descendants of Isma'il عليه السلام, connecting his lineage to the family of Ibrahim عليه السلام.

Second — His connection to Makkah

His family belonged to Quraysh and Banu Hashim, deeply connected with Makkah and the Sacred House.

Third — His social environment

Muhammad ﷺ was born into a respected family within Quraysh, yet he would later challenge many of the religious and social practices of his own society.

Fourth — His mission was not based on tribal privilege

Although he came from a noble lineage, Islam would teach that true honor before Allah is connected to righteousness and obedience—not simply ancestry.

Allah says:

“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”
— Qur'an 49:13

So the noble lineage of Muhammad ﷺ is part of his history, but the greatness of his mission came from Allah's choice, revelation, and prophethood.

11. The Family Through Which the Final Messenger Would Come

Now the picture becomes clearer.

From the descendants of Ibrahim عليه السلام came Isma'il عليه السلام.

From the descendants of Isma'il came Kinanah.

From Kinanah came Quraysh.

From Quraysh came Banu Hashim.

And from Banu Hashim came:

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ himself described this distinction in an authentic narration:

“Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Isma'il, chose Quraysh from Kinanah, chose Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banu Hashim.”

Sahih Muslim 2276

This is the family into which the final Messenger of Allah ﷺ was born.

But there was another side of his family story that we must explore.

His mother was Aminah bint Wahb, and her family belonged to another respected branch of Quraysh.

In the next part, we will look more closely at Aminah, Abdullah, Abd al-Muttalib, the circumstances before the birth of Muhammad ﷺ, and the moment when Makkah welcomed its greatest son.
